Why do we do Process Improvement (Six Sigma and Lean) certification training? The job market has changed dramatically in the past couple of years. It's no longer enough to have years of relevant experience, an undergraduate degree or even an advanced degree. The cynical view is that employers are increasingly using certifications of all types to help them screen potential applicants for jobs. Whether this eventually proves to provide any long-term benefits to them or not, it provides a short-term benefit in reducing candidate flow in an overcrowded job applicant pool. As a result, otherwise qualified applicants often get screened out because of a missing industry or topical certification. A more proactive view is that employers prefer candidates with a knowledge of current relevant business topics. Six Sigma and Lean are two such topics that of are great interest to many employers. Candidates who distinguish themselves by displaying credentials in these areas will appeal to more employers than those who don't. Job seekers who have taken the initiative to educate themselves in current business improvement methodologies have a distinct edge when competing in a tough job market. Commercial courses which are aimed towards corporate-reimbursed students are often too expensive for job seekers or those who are forced to purchase their own training.
